By: Simonmiles Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2019 Rating:
Typical de Waard quality in a relatively compact (for heavyweight canvas) 1-2 person tent. There is a very generous porch (which takes an optional vario-awning not shown as I did not purchase it). The tent offers standing room and a nice useable space at the front with a smaller sleeping area to the rear tucked away neatly under the sloping roof. Compact but comfortable for two, it really excels as a spacious one-person tent. It's also perfect if, like me, you mostly have it to yourself but occasionally need to make space for the wife.
The optional inner tent is very expensive. But you should seriously consider buying it if you camp outside the main summer season, because it's superb. Beautifully made out of thick cotton with an insulated sewn-in carpet, it's just a lovely place to sleep. Unlike most inner tents, which are typically loose and blousy, de Waard inners are held properly under tension by a combination of clips, zips and velcro closures. The inner tent creates a highly effective micro-climate, which transforms the potential of the tent for 3-4 season camping. For me this is one of the main selling points of the tent.
Ventilation is excellent, with mesh vents front and rear with the option to zip in a full height mesh panel into the main door section (but more on this below).
There are multiple pegging points and the internal poles are cross threaded widthways across the roof, all of which helps to create an incredibly strong and stable structure, while the heavyweight TenCate canvas provides very high levels of waterproofing. Not for nothing are de Waards known as the original storm tents. The confidence this inspires in bad weather is wonderful. The downside, of course, is it's not a quick tent to pitch. It is easy, however, to pitch on your own. With practice, one person can do it in 30 minutes, which is really not too bad.
If I have a complaint, it would be with the door design, which employs a set of zip-in panels: two main panels and a third all-mesh panel, which can be zipped into the doorway in place of one of the main panels. If this sounds complicated it's because it is. Swapping panels requires a lot of fiddling about with zips (see photos). I would prefer a conventional two panel door with mesh panels/blinds. I would also prefer a standard zip closure across the bottom of the door. Instead, de Waard uses press studs. Apparently, this is a more durable way of securing the bottom of the door than zips. However, press studs just aren't as easy to close as zips (particularly in the dark).
These are minor quibbles, however. Overall, this is a fantastic 1-2 person canvas tent fully useable (with inner tent) for 3-4 season camping. The quality of materials and construction are outstanding. Everything is built to last and immaculately finished, some of it clearly by hand. Not a casual purchase by any means, but truly a tent for life. Highly recommend if the size suits and you're ready to make this kind of investment.
